In cartoons, vultures circle in the sky above people who are lost in the desert, waiting for them to die so that they can swoop
down and start eating them. Is it true? Vultures do circle, but mainly
just to look for food. They are scavengers that feed on carrion – old,
rotting dead bodies. They can spot these from high in the sky and can also smell rotting flesh. im stuffeD! Vultures often live in desert areas, and they can go
for days, or even weeks without food. So, when they do find a tasty
rotting carcass, they eat as much as they possibly can. They stuff
themselves so full they can’t fly or even move! They have to sit on the ground until their dinner is digested. Eating rotten meat seems disgusting, but vultures actually help us by clearing away smelly
and germy dead animals. There are many different types of vulture. These white backed vultures are competing with a jackal for a dead zebra. Why aren't they ill? Rotting meat contains revolting
bacteria that can make humans, and many other animals, very ill. Vultures don’t care, though – their
super-strong stomachs are not affected by the germs. However, they do sometimes die when they
eat farm animals that have been given medicines, which are poisonous to them.
